Press release.   Four Boxes Gallery is pleased to present Jacob Dahl Jürgensen’s solo exhibition Securities.
The exhibition consists of three groups of works: a series of large paper collages mounted on canvas, a series of smaller digital prints on Perspex, and a plaster sculpture in several parts. As its title suggests, the central theme of the exhibition is finance. The theme is further developed in an examination of the relationship in between sign and meaning. Securities, or ‘financial instruments’, are tradable assets of various kinds such as bank notes, common stocks and bonds. These financial instruments all consist of a concrete document which represents an abstract value. In a similar manner, the works in the exhibition all examine sign and meaning - or value - and the relationship in between original and copy.

CAPITAL is a sculpture in 18 parts which consists of plaster casts of a three metre long column, complete with base and capital. The positive model for the negative casts is a synthetic decorative column, in itself a copy of a classical greek ideal. The sculpture’s parts are spread out over the gallery spaces’ floors as if it were a sort of artificial ruin.

The column’s grooves are reflected in the horizontal stripes on Securities, a series of large, monochrome collages mounted on canvas. The collages consists of pastel-coloured security paper (Kant Kopy), sourced in the United States. The paper is normally used for printing documents which must not be copied; e.g. cheque books, certificates and diplomas. It has a built-in and invisible pantograph, which is a fine pattern that, because of a Moiré effect, appear on a photocopy in the shape of the word ‘VOID’. The sheets of paper have been copied again and again thus marking out the word more and more strongly but ultimately rendering it unintelligible.

The large collages are accompanied by Derivatives, a series of painterly A4 prints on Perspex. The black and white digital prints are images of brush strokes and are all manipulated versions of the same photograph - a single stock photo bought online.
